VNS Learns About ASL

Kim Silva reads to the students in ASL

We had a special visitor on Friday, October 20. Retired American School for the Deaf teacher Kim Silva joined our class to read "The Hallo-Weiner" by Dave Pilkey -- in American Sign Language!

Before the story, Kim introduced the class to her Deaf stuffed-animal friend Tigger. She explained the difference between both of Tigger's hearing aids and how proud he is to be Deaf.

Next, Kim treated them to a voice-off story. (VNS Alumni mom Sonya Kix served as her interpreter). ASL is a beautifully expressive language, and the children were activated by Kim's movements and expressions.

After a big round of Deaf applause, Kim and Tigger taught the kids a few new signs. Having both visit our classroom was a huge treat, and we can't wait to have them back soon!
